How Did This All Start? If you’ve read The History of TBOX, you know we started back in 1996, and we’ve had people who’ve come to 5, 10, 15 and even EVERY TBOX. So we wanted a way to reward and recognize the loyal crawlers.

When we started drawing numbers on peoples’ hands, and then when we started with numbered badges, it became a thing to have a single-digit badge number. So we assigned those to our favorite people… and by 2006, we formally recognized the Top 30 numbered people as The Royal Court. The license plates came the next year, and the Royal Court grew to having 69 active members from 2012-2014.

The People with Badge Number One, 2001-2013

From 2001 to 2013, Mr. Festa selected one of his friends and top TBOX-er to be the special Super-VIP Guest of Honor with Badge #0001. During these years, #1 served as our event mascot and then received the giant buckets of cereal poured over the head to start TBOX. By year, #1 alternated between a male and a female, until 2014, when Mister Festa decided to end this tradition and just make himself Number One. It’s a long story why, but feel free to ask when if you meet him! 🙂

Our Friends #2 and #3…

As of 2015, Mister Festa has appointed 2 of his best friends, Fred and Fuji, with over 35 combined years of TBOX experience, to be Royal Badge #2 and #3, for Life. Fred & Fuji have helped Mister Festa with TBOX more than almost anyone through the years, and have almost NEVER missed a single other crawl. When you meet them, consider it an honor!

Mister Festa’s Royal TBOX Interns

Back around 2003-2005, as TBOX was growing, Mr. Festa realized he needed some assistance during the day of the event. It was becoming unseemly for him to have to carry his own stuff, get his own drinks, and fend off paparazzi without help.

The form in which this help would come was inspired by the Seinfeld episode where Kramer gets a College Intern to handle his ridiculous daily affairs:

Kramer: You see, I come up with these things, I know they’re gold, but nothing happens. You know why?
Jerry: No resources, no skill, no talent, no ability, no brains…

Kramer: Well, apparently the University is very enthusiastic about their students getting some “Real World” corporate experience.
Jerry: Unfortunately, you only provide “Fantasy World” corporate experience.

School Dean: As far as I can tell, your entire enterprise consists of nothing more than a solitary man with a messy apartment which may or may not contain a chicken.

Fortuitously, at the Taste of Randolph Street festival in the summer of 2006, two young ladies named Virginia and Michelle showed up at the Festa booth wearing custom T-Shirts with Mr. Festa’s picture, and said, “We will do ANYTHING to be on the Royal Court this year” – and the answer was, “Be My TBOX Interns!”

Equipped with Bullwhips purchased from a Leather Store on North Halsted, their duties were to whip anyone who crowded or showed disrespect to Mr. Festa, get all his drinks, reserve tables, announce his entry, carry his equipment, and “serve the crawl in whatever capacity required”. We had TBOX Interns from 2006-2013, and as of 2015, are bringing the program back. If you think you’re qualified, let us know – there are tons of perks including full royal privileges!
